It's the coconut oil that makes it a truly remarkable food and medicine. Coconut oil consists of over 90% saturated fat and is therefore nearly solid at room temperature. It can be used in cooking, but is also a common ingredient in home remedies and skin/hair products. Once mistakenly believed to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, it is now known that the fat in coconut oil is unique and different from most all other fats and possesses many health giving properties. Another delicious aspect of coconut is the water. Coconut water is the liquid you hear sloshing around inside the younger green coconuts. Coconut water has natural electrolytes (potassium and other minerals) making it an effective hydration drink and a much healthier alternative to traditional sports drinks. If you do not have access to coconuts you could of course just buy the pre-drained coconut water such as VITACOCO, but cracking your own coconut yourself is much more enjoyable (and primal).
